HOW TO FLY, the book, has gone through many incarnations over the past 12 years! The initial idea came to me while awakening from a very vivid daytime dream of flying that I experienced in 1996.

Immediately after waking from this "waking dream" I picked up my notebook and started to write... and this story is what flowed forth.

I was very comfortable with the process of channeled or inspired writing... but this piece came to me in a very new voice, which was so light, fun and uplifting.

The story continued to live within me, and I kept getting images of it as a small book... and so I did a very quick layout of just the text, with only one or two lines on each page.

I printed out the pages, stapled them together, and was inspired to grab some colored pencils and add some illustrations.

Now, I did NOT consider myself an artist at this time. I was comfortable with performing onstage, but had no confidence in my ability to draw or paint.

But because I was just having fun with this small project for myself, I completely let my inner child express himself while creating the initial drawings, which were primarily stick figures and simple shapes.

I was quickly realizing that this could become a book that others would enjoy... and I envisioned hiring an artist to create illustrations for it, based on my initial inspiration.

However, sometime later I was inspired to sit back down at the computer to "translate" what I had done by hand into computer based graphics.

I was somewhat amazed as I discovered my own simple drawings coming to life before me. I still envisioned hiring someone else to do the artwork, but I was less certain now.

Soon thereafter, I showed my little story to a friend who was an accomplished artist and art teacher. She told me in no uncertain terms that what I had created was clearly meant to go together! She loved the simplicity of the artwork and the words, and felt that they were a perfect match.
I then set out creating the first copies of this little "gift book" to share with a few friends and family members.

Those first copies were printed on my inkjet printer, at quarter-page size. (4.25x5.5) They were lovingly hand-bound, and given only to a few people.

Over the next few years, I would occasionally make changes to the cover design, or find a new way to lay-out the book, but the form stayed essentially the same.

Even though people who received a copy usually told me that they would love extra copies to give as gifts, I still felt that this was a very personal item, meant for only those closest to me. But in the back of my mind, I knew that the day would eventually come for this book to "fly on its own."

Fast forward a number of years, and technology available for self-publishing had moved ahead quite a bit... and it seemed time once again to revisit my little book.

This time, the project kept expanding in scope, as I discovered new possibilities for printing.

I had also undergone a powerful spiritual shift in the summer of 2008, and my own energy was now expanding rapidly. One of the things that felt really good to me during this time of inner transformation was expressing myself creatively... and the little HOW TO FLY book kept calling out to me to allow it to express on the next level!

And that is how this book has now become available to the general public.

I've often described it as a "children's book for adults," but it seems to speak to children and young adults, as well.

This book is only an appetizer in the grand buffet of life... but it is meant to whet your appetite for more adventure, more fulfillment, and to stimulate you to remember your own childhood dreams and visions.

Perhaps you have an inspired idea or two of your own from years ago that is just now ready to be dusted off and shared with the world.

I'd love to hear about what you are inspired to create!

many blessings,

Kellan Christopher
